Hey MassBikers!
Are you a MassBike member? If so, thank you!
No? Please join today!
Things we love: bikes, local farms, yoga, barbecue, and paddle boats. Our guess is that you love at least one of these activities too! The great news is that you can partake in any (or all!) of these fun opportunities at our upcoming Summer Century and Family Fun Fest on July 27. This year’s event will include a Century, a Metric Century, and a 30 mile ride, in addition to post-ride fun for the whole family. Register today! This fundraiser supports all the great programs MassBike has going on.

REMINDER: Public Hearing on Bike Safety Bills is this Wednesday at the State House!
Last week, we sent out an Action Alert to let you know that the first hearing on two bike safety bills is scheduled to take place before the Committee on Transportation on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 10:00 AM, in State House Room B-1.
We hope you are able to join MassBike at the hearing to tell your story, and to urge the Joint Committee on Transportation to report favorably on these bills: The Act To Protect Vulnerable Road Users (S 1639) and The Act To Protect Bicyclists In Bicycle Lanes (S 1640). For more information on the bills, please see our Legislative Fact Sheet.
If you are unable to attend next week’s hearing, there are a number of action-steps you can take, which are described here.

We are pleased to present the fourth annual Summer Century and Family Fun Fest. The day’s events will begin with the start of the Century Ride at 7:00am Saturday, July 27th at the beautiful NARA Park in Acton, Ma.
This year’s bicycling options include a Metric Century and a 30 mile ride, in addition to the flagship Century ride.
All rides will journey through the rolling hills of the Concord and Assabet River valleys with stops along the way at a number of local farms: Honey Pot Hill Orchards, Great Brook Farm, Kimball Farm, and Verrill Farm. Verrill Farm will be conducting free farm tours and cooking demos starting at 9am!
The rides will end at NARA Park, where there will be some post-ride fun, including beach activities, paddle boat races, canoeing, chalk art, kids cycle race, and a free post-ride yoga class provided by Amory Fitness.
Lunch will be provided by Redbones BBQ for all and beer provided by Samuel Adams (for our 21+ riders). Non-rider tickets are also available, so you can bring the whole family to partake in the food, drinks and activities!

Earlier in the month, MassBike kicked off a project in Springfield to help develop a bicycle and pedestrian plan and implementation strategy, which will set the stage for increased rates of active transportation in the city. While the details are still being finalized, Programs Director Price Armstrong has been spending two to three days per week in Springfield for the past few weeks getting the ball rolling.
This work is a part of the Community Transformation Grant (CTG) awarded to Springfield (click here for more about the overall project). The project is being headed by Live Well Springfield, a coalition of community groups and government entities including the City of Springfield, Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, and Partners for a Healthier Community, among many others. While MassBike will be focusing on bicycling and pedestrian issues…

Bike Night Recap!
We wish to extend a very heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our annual Bike Night event on June 7th at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. The night began with a silent auction, raffle, and cocktail hour, and it was all a smashing success!
Proceeds from the event will benefit MassBike’s public programming efforts by providing Massachusetts with youth and community cycling education courses, legislative action, and advocacy for safer cycling, as well as fun rides and events that support safer and more accessible infrastructures throughout the Commonwealth.
We also would like to give a special thank you to our gracioussponsors, without whom this event would not have been possible.
Thanks also to our product partners for their charitable contributions and their continued support of the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition. The fashion show was made possible by donations from over fifty vendors to whom we extend our gratitude.
Our models were amazing and we thank them for their wonderful catwalk performances, and delighting the crowds.
We also would like to extend our appreciation to the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel for graciously hosting the event and providing the perfect backdrop to our staged fashion show.
Thanks again for participating and we hope to see you again at future MassBike events!
Thanks to Chinh Bui for photographing the evening’s events. All event photos are posted on Facebook, please Like us on Facebook and tag yourselves. Individual photos will be sent out in a separate email. |

The League of American Bicyclists recently announced that over 30,000 people have signed up for the National Bike Challenge. Just under 1,000 Massachusetts residents have signed up, which means we have a bit of catching up to do. Let’s show the other 49 states and the District of Columbia how much the Bay State loves to bike!
The challenge, which runs through the end of September, is a fun way to count your summer mileage. There’s even an app for smart phones to help track all of your rides and favorite routes! Don’t be ashamed of that metric century you did the other day just for fun-log it!
There are also a number of prizes available to win for those who consistently track rides lasting more than one mile each day. The more you bike, the better your chance of winning (and the better the prizes) will be!
For a step-by-step process for registering for the National Bike Challenge, click here. That page shows you how to register for Endomondo (the website the drives the Challenge) and how to create teams within your workplace or school. You can also register as an individual. If you have any questions, contact BikeInfo@MassBike.org.
